Envato Community - Help Us Build our 2020 Vision

by Collis Ta'eed, CEO, Founder, Reformed Web Designer.

Here at Envato, our first company value is "When the Community Succeeds, We Succeed". It's a bit of a mantra for how we try to work as a company. Late last year in my 2013 Envato Wrap-up I reported back to the community on what we were doing to help them succeed.

Today I'd like to ask the community for some input to help us build a company vision for the future.

For the last few months the team has been discussing what Envato could achieve by the end of the decade. We've had more than two dozen meetings internally at our HQ and with remote team members. One thing we've all felt sure of is that our vision should be all about serving our community. After all, that's our core company value.

Our aim in creating a company vision is to paint a picture of what Envato might look like in 2020. This will then be the destination point that we work towards.

A great example of a company vision is Microsoft's vision from the 1980s which was to put a computer in every home and on every desk. Or JFK's vision to put a man on the moon.

What will Envato's vision be? We're not 100% sure yet. But it's going to be about helping our community succeed. So the most important question for us is:

What does community success look like?

Who is the Community?

A natural question to ask here is: who exactly is Envato's community? We've never had a hard and fast definition, and tend to think of the community in a broad and multi-faceted way. That is to say that there's an Envato author community, a buyer one, a learner one, a staff one, a Ruby dev one, a freelancer one, and so on. Put all together we have an over-arching Envato Community.

Perhaps the best way to think of it is, if you feel you're a part of the Envato community, then you are.

What does 'Community Success' look like?

It's all well and good to discuss this internally, but if we really want to serve our community, we need to find out what you all believe that means. First we need to ask you all these questions:

In the context of the Envato ecosystem, what does success mean to you?

What do you want to achieve through our sites? What new things and in what new ways could we be helping you succeed?

And just as importantly, what would it look like for the whole community to be succeeding?

You can get involved in the community discussion on this topic in lots of different ways:

What's Next?

We're going to spend the next couple of weeks getting as much community feedback as we can. Then over the following month we're going to compile it all, along with the output of all our staff discussions, and loop back here on Inside.Envato. From there we'll construct a vision of what we want to achieve by 2020.

Then comes the hard part: setting our minds to achieving it!!

Thank you to everyone who takes part and adds their voice to this discussion. It will help us shape the company we wish to be, and hopefully be a company of genuine value to our community.
